The Statistics Indonesia office for DKI Jakarta reported that, over the past year, most international tourists visiting the capital came from China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In a recent video shared on the official YouTube channel of the DKI Jakarta Statistics Indonesia office, acting head Dwi Paramita Dewi stated that the number of foreign tourists arriving in Jakarta in 2023 rose by 109.06 percent compared to the previous year. In 2022, the bureau recorded 938,991 foreign visitors, while in 2023, that number surged to approximately 1.97 million.
Dewi further elaborated that Chinese tourists made up the largest group of international visitors.
“Throughout 2023, Chinese tourists were the largest group of overseas visitors to Jakarta,” Dewi explained in the video, which was published and live-streamed on February 5. “The number of Chinese tourists reached 319,802, accounting for 16.29 percent of all international visitors.”
Following China, Malaysia and Singapore contributed the next highest numbers of tourists to Jakarta last year.
“Malaysian and Singaporean tourists ranked second and third, respectively,” Dewi added. “There were 237,928 tourists from Malaysia, making up 12.12 percent, and 153,254 from Singapore, comprising 7.81 percent.”
According to the DKI Jakarta Statistics Indonesia office, the significant increase in foreign visitors was likely linked to the global recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2023 alone, 174,111 international arrivals were recorded at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, and the Port of Tanjung Priok.
However, the bureau also noted that this figure was lower than the number of international arrivals in December of the previous year, which stood at 191,461.
